What is a Makerspace?

We put together a little video to help explain what MyShop is and how we can help you make stuff. Enjoy.  

A makerspace is a physical location where people can meet to share the use of a wide variety of equipment, work spaces, and the collaborative expertise that they each bring to the community of makers. MyShop empowers you to make whatever it is you desire.

Who is a Maker?

A maker is very broad term. ‘Maker’ can be used to describe hobbyists to entrepreneurs. People who focus on home crafts, baking, building circuit boards, woodworking and even machinists can be described as makers. Basically, if you enjoy making things, you are a maker!

How does MyShop work?

MyShop is a physical location where people can meet to share the use of a wide variety of equipment, work spaces, and the collaborative expertise that they each bring to the community of makers. It’s easy. Whatever your background or skills are, anyone can join the community! For a monthly or annual fee, members can reserve MyShop’s tools and  equipment to use in the facility. Each member will need successful completion of equipment-specific Basic Use and Safety (BUS) courses. Experienced staff members are available full time to help inspire ideas and develop technical skills. MyShop makes it possible for anyone with a dream to be able to make whatever it is they can conceive.

Where is MyShop located?

MyShop’s electronics and prototyping lab is located at 44 Gaukel St. MyShop’s contract work facility is located off site due to space limitations at 44 Gaukel St.

What is a BUS course?

A BUS or Basic Use and Safety course is a safety course on steroids. In order to provide the safest environment for all members, everyone is required to complete the BUS course for any given machine or group of machines. Due to the complexity of some of the high tech equipment, some courses only cover one machine. However, other BUS courses can cover an entire area of the shop. Each course averages 2 hours in length.

What is a Starter Kit?

A starter kit is comprised of various bits, cutters, tips, blades, tools etc. Basically everything you need to get started making at MyShop.

What is the difference between MyShop and other makerspaces?

What sets MyShop apart from all the rest is that MyShop is fully staffed, equipped and maintained facility. If you ever have a question that needs answering or direction of machine use, our staff will be happy to help.

How can I get involved?

You can either become a member, or hire MyShop to make things for you!
